(SBC) to supply asymmetric digital subscriber line equipment for SBC's $6 billion Project Pronto high-speed Internet service. An Alcatel spokesman declined to give financial details of the contract - estimated by market watchers at around $4.5 billion - but said Alcatel will be the sole supplier of ADSL and digital local loop carrier equipment for the service. Alcatel shares rose on the confirmation, up 4.9%, or EUR6.10, to EUR131.40 at 1238 GMT. (Corrected 1444GMT) SBC - the largest U.S. phone company, following its $73 billion merger with Ameritech Corp. - announced Monday that it is speeding up the expansion of its digital subscriber line service. The company hopes to offer the service to 77 million customers within three years. Project Pronto will provide customers with always-on, high-speed voice, data and video services. The service won't, however, include cable-like television programming. The service will offer customers connection speeds of at least 1.5 megabits a second, with more than 60% eligible to receive 6 megabits a second, the company said. -By Steve Rhinds + 33 (0) 1-40-17-17-52 -steve.rhinds@dowjones.com An Alcatel spokesman declined to give financial details of the contract - estimated by market watchers at around $4.5 billion - but said Alcatel will be the sole supplier of ADSL and digital local loop carrier equipment for the service.
