Rent "Encino Man" one day. I watch it for the verbal antics of Pauly Shore, ultimate California urbanite. Wife watches it fro ... Brendan Frasier with very few clothes. <ggg>
I wasn't scoffing at Chaplin. But Steve Martin or Lucille Ball ... yes, I agree that they were very talented and very popular. But anything more than that? Entertainers as a group deal in the commodity of popularity ... and I personally believe that very very few entertainers leave a deep or wide imprint on our cultural identity.

The idea of the entertainer, and the way there has been crossover between the techniques of the entertainment industry and the election industry ... that might provide grist for the mill. But I'd like more experienced observers than I to put names on who enabled or effected this crossover. The conceivers and realizers are imo greater (for better or for worse) than the familiar faces they employ.
