Electrical power generation trend? Whether it is this or turbines, it is DEFINITELY away from coal and towards NG. Direct FuelCell (TM) PowerPlant Connected to Utility Grid, Emissions Far Below Clean Air Standard DANBURY, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 19, 1999-- FuelCell Energy, Inc. (AMEX:FCL - news) has generated more than 1 million kilowatt hours of power at the company's Direct FuelCell(TM) power plant in Danbury, Conn., it was announced today by Jerry D. Leitman, president and chief executive officer of FuelCell Energy (FCL). ''This is a major milestone in the commercialization of our Direct FuelCell technology,'' Leitman said. ''Our ability to generate 1 million kilowatt hours of power at this 250 kW plant - which is the basic building block for both our sub-megawatt and megawatt-class power plant products - provides strong evidence of the operability and reliability of our proprietary Direct FuelCell technology, which we expect to have in commercial field trials in Europe this year and in the US next year.'' The power plant, a demonstration project commissioned in March 1999, powers FCL's Danbury, Conn. facilities. Excess electricity is delivered to the local electric utility grid. The grid interface connection performed flawlessly throughout the demonstration and the power quality met industry standards. The plant has successfully operated more than 5,700 hours, with more than 4,300 hours at or greater than 200 kW. Stack power improved almost 10 percent over the previous model, according to the latest test results. Air pollution emissions are negligible and far below requirements under the Clean Air Standard. The fuel cell, which continues to operate, reached a maximum power of 263 kW, converting pipeline natural gas to electricity. The plant produces high-grade waste heat that can be utilized for cogeneration through high-pressure steam or absorption air conditioning. This would result in an overall efficiency exceeding 75%. The plant availability has been more than 95%. With the achievement of this milestone, the power plant will be stress tested under various operating conditions for the balance of 1999. ...biz.yahoo.com
