"You know that a decoder is needed as part of the encoding process, so two decoders are dedicated to the two encoding portions of DVxplore"

If you are just watching/decoding you have 4 decoders at your disposal. You could watch 4 channels at once, each sharing a quarter of the screen. In Fred's case it would be the spice or Vivid channel with each quarter of the screen set to view a different angle...

"when CUBE gets its firmware straightened out for simultaneous encode and playback on a DVxplore"

Let's not mix up simultaneous MPEG2 encode/decode with simultaneous DVD record and playback.

I would hazard a guess that the Samsung box can record and playback using just the Codec. But the Codec doesn't support all the trick DVD features like frame advanced, angles, slow motion, title selection, chapter selection etc... (remember it's an MPEG2 codec).
They probably figured Fred would stick in his Vivid DVD's and get all upset at Alex because the angles feature didn't work as expected.
Simple quick to market solution, stick in a Ziva.
