Rick. How soon we forget. There were 25 to 35% losses on some of those missions. The chance or returning from 35 missions was very small.

<OT: Reality Check>

Thank you for this. My dad was exempted, but two of my uncles were in the Army and served in Europe. Happily, both returned home. That's it for the personal side.

As for the larger meaning, we should both be thankful, as you say, and remember we are not really all that far from those days. Just check out some of the political rhetoric around the world today. As well as some recent physical incidents.

Than you for the reminder of what some have paid (and continue to pay) for all that we have.

Diamond, Good Point. I thank my Dad to this day, especially on the Fourth of July, His Birthday!

OT--Legacy of a generation:

Many say that the generation that fought, agonized, wept, silently suffered, lived and died through that time was the most courageous, noble and selfless of all that came before. It would be hard to argue the point. Of course, many of our parents, whether they survived the war or not, had their lives stripped away in countless ways during the course of that epic struggle.

Rick, your intimate experience of your parents' participation, brought more closely home to you in Houston, will, I am sure, be transmitted to your children, and so will their lives be enriched and enlivened.

Thanks.

Diamond H: OT Reality Check: Perspective is a fluid vehicle that we all travel in. Thanks for the ride.

We in fact do owe a lot to those who came and did before us. My favorite quote by Einstein is "...I have stood on the shoulders of giants."

My uncle had a different take, "You don't owe me anything for doing what is right." He as many in his generation don't expect anything. This is yet another gift which they bestow upon us. The added priveledge of being gracious. I still have much to learn.

May we continue to stand on their shoulders.

They changed the course of history in a way that can barely be imagined. Nothing we can do or say would be enough to repay the debt we owe. It reminds me of the scene in Private Ryan where he, in tears, asks his wife if he has been a good man.(I hope I got it right.)

Thanks Diamond.

Yes diamond,

Odd you made that post. Journeyed to Huntsville Ala. about three weeks ago specifically for that purpose. Dad now on his last leg. Without a doubt telling him of my thanks for that and everything else he did for me is one of the best things I have ever done. Will always remember that. He had a smile I was totally unfamiliar with.

thanks,

Voltaire

What a great post Diamond. THanks so much for sharing it. I watched "Saving Private Ryan" for the first time the other night..Very emotional for me. I can only imagine the intensity and overwhelming sadness and pride you must have felt on your trip.
I wonder if our generation would be willing to make the kind of sacrifices the prior ones did. Sadly, they probably wouldn't.

Your father's legacy lives on in you..nothing can diminish your importance.

Thanks again
