IBM creates database solution for bioscience

``As a result of all the activity that has been going on over the last few years there is this mammoth quantity of data all shoved into various databases,' said Daniel McCurdy, vice president of IBM's Life Sciences.

``The only way you can understand all this data is to have some mechanism, such as a query application, that can access all the information without having to stick it all into one database,' McCurdy said.

For instance, if a researcher is searching for specific information or data on asthma, DiscoverLink allows him or her to enter a query phrase and pulls all the available information that a company might have, regardless of whether its a database of chemical compounds or an Excel spreadsheet of textual data
