Microsoft Names Fonix as a Charter Member Of its Embedded Tools Partner Program
Fonix Speech, Voice, and Handwriting Recognition Technologies to be Included In Applications
Running on Microsoft's Windows CE
SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Fonix Corporation(TM) (Nasdaq: FONX - news), a
leader in text-to-speech (TTS), automatic speech recognition (ASR) and handwriting recognition
(HWR) technologies, today announced that Microsoft©, at its Embedded Partner Summit in
Seattle, named Fonix as a charter member of its new third-party development-tool program for
embedded systems developers. Fonix is the first and the only speech and handwriting software
company currently participating in the program.

As a member of the Microsoft Embedded Tools Partner Program, Fonix is integrating its core
technologies into the Windows CE platform builder. This will allow Windows CE developers to
create applications for industrial and consumer devices such as PDAs, set top boxes, Kiosks, and
mobile computing devices using Fonix speech recognition, text-to-speech, and handwriting
recognition.

``Fonix has successfully ported its speech technologies to silicon chips. Currently, our core
technologies are operating on several microprocessors, such as the Intel StrongArm 1100, and
now we are developing solutions for Windows CE,' said D. Lynn Shepherd, vice president of
engineering at Fonix. ``Because of Fonix's low power requirements and small memory footprint,
product developers can integrate speech into applications that previously did not have the
computing power to process speech. Microsoft recognized this competitive advantage offered by
Fonix and included Fonix in its Embedded Partner Program', said Shepherd.

As part of the Fonix product plan, several products utilizing Fonix core speech ASR, and
handwriting recognition technologies have been aimed at the embedded systems markets. Initial
product areas have focused on these technologies running on 16 and 32-bit processors and
include command and control for PDA's, cell phones, web pads, automotive, aviation, smart
appliances and consumer electronics which operate in the Windows CE environment. Using Fonix
integrated development environment software (named FAAST) for embedded environments,
product developers can quickly develop, optimize, and integrate ASR, TTS, and HWR into their
products.

Benefits of the Embedded Tools Partner program include technical assistance and access to early
releases of Microsoft software. A special focus of the programs is support for integration of
partner products with Microsoft development tools. The program also offers co-marketing
opportunities for members including advertising, partner catalogs, case studies, and seminars.
