Just drag the border at the far left of the Quick Launch bar, just to the right of the Start button, and drag it off the taskbar. You can then play with the dimensions of it, and place it anywhere you like.

If you ever close it by mistake, or otherwise lose it, just right click the taskbar, then go 'toolbars/quick launch' to get it back. As long as you don't delete the shortcuts from the Quick Launch folder on your hard drive, you can't lose it.
