you're not thinking about that correctly. a problem w/ gold delivery is not like LTCM. You can't just print up gold or put together a bunch of banks to loan some cash. there's only so much gold out there. if the fed were to meet someone's gold obligation for them, they would have to pull it from the treasury or the open mkt (the fed has no gold) in order to buy it, they'd have to bid up the price. so no help there. if they steal it form the treasury... the US has less gold.. dollar falls. gold rises. no help there. they could attempt some form of derivative help... but my guess is that has already been done in the last few weeks....
