Yes, UNIX, and in particular Linux is a breeze. I installed and brought up a Linux machine for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and it took less than half an hour to bring it up and integrate it with our internal network. There was almost nothing to do, since it is based on the same standards technologies as our other UNIX machines, and was able to deduce how it should configure itself. It doesn't invent terms, and proprietary protocols that don't talk to other technologies on equal terms. And the file caching in Linux is phenomenal, our across-the-network builds run 10 to 20 times (TIMES) faster than from our NT workstations.

It is only lack of time which prevents me from throwing the NT system away and replacing it with a Linux machine. That event is rapidly approaching.

The point is, twister, that a computer should be no more difficult to install than a telephone, and have the same level of reliability and ease of use. When Microsoft put THAT into their vision statement, I will start to take them seriously.

...were're talking inevitable here...

Hardly.

I know I'm supposed to agree with everything, but I don't agree with that particular hyperbole.

w2k might well be a big smash for M$FT. Then again, I can imagine a time 12 months from now where both Merced and W2K have flopped in their market debuts on serious servers (desktops I'm sure W2K will do fine), and enterprise DP managers have "capitulated", as they say, and realized that they need a genuine alternative.

No slam dunk. But far from impossible. w2k conquering the world is less likely, IMHO.

twister,

I recommend RedHat 6.0. It's only $80 and has Netscape and
StarOffice bundled. It installs in about 15-20 minutes with
an EZ-GUI interface that is Windows-like. Tell your mom I
recommend that her son wise up and use Linux, too.

cheers,
cherylw

proggy. so UNIX is a breeze and my mom should install it?

No man. YOU install it FOR your mom and YOU do the futzing and sys admin (run root) remotely so she neither HAS to or screws anything up.

were're talking inevitable here. inevitable that msft is getting it right on w2k and better from then on.

You really should look a little deeper into this whole Unix on the internet IP server thing, twister. Unlike you, the rest of thw world is beginning to get hip not just to the M$ BS, but also WHY it's BS from the ground up.

Twister, I think you owe Proggy an apology for posturing the way you did when he said that you were an idiot. <g>
