I'm not surprised at the "urban legend" aspect of the story... I found it hard to believe the asbestos part. But the bleaching part did seem realistic. As you said, "some factual information mixed with more than a bit of fiction."

I just don't know... tampons haven't been around long enough to assess the results of long-term use. But I'm sure a guinea-pig!

Thanks for the link--it's good to get every side of an issue.

that was nice of you to post the link- it requires a lot of time to check out every story and it is always nice when people help out by posting useful links.

I thought the Village Voice report at the very end of that was interesting, in that it questioned the amount of dioxin which used to be considered harmless may actually not be, that it might be enough to cause irregularities. It;'s unfortunate that there IS some truth in these e-mails-- enough to make you a little nervous about what you're putting in your body.

This reminds me of the apple scare years ago, when Meryl Streep looked into my eyes (well- she was on TV, but she's soooo sincere)and told me that I was killing my babies with apple juice that contained a pesticide. I wrote a check immediately so she could save the world from the evil alar apple assasins.
It almost destroyed the apple industry.
Then I felt terrible. My husband said, "You sent them money??"

"Well, no, I sent my good friend, Meryl, money."

By the way--- did anyone else notice that the name of
The Tampon Health Website, an information clearinghouse- is
(I'm trying not to giggle here)
S.P.O.T?

Thanks, CR. Agree with those who question how "safe" a "little" bit of dioxin is. Husband, who has a master's in public health, says that dioxin is very controversial, safety very much open to debate. As for asbestos, darnit, you just can't get it anymore. I never bought an asbestos trivet for my gas stove, I never bought asbestos gloves, and now, they can't be had for love or money.

On the other hand, I've worked for a plaintiff firm that handled a lot of asbestosis cases, still have copies of a lot of the documents that were hidden away back in the 1920's and 1930's, just as documents on addiction to tobacco were hidden. I can see how urban legends get started, it doesn't take many incidents like those to make one not only distrustful, but gullible.

I was a law clerk at the asbestosis firm, the lawyer I worked for described visiting our biggest client, who was dying of pulmonary complications of asbestosis, he drowned in his own lung fluid. It took a long, long time, days and days, he was conscious for most of it, sitting up in a chair.
