lee...ot 3m

3m has a hybrid situation toward export. they export via domestic exporters who buy direct from 3m and then export to their end users. 3m also has foreign operations which manufacture locally, but 3m will export usa manufactured product to the foreign 3m operation with payment made in us dollars. in essence it is no different then shipping between regional usa cost centers. this is where the problem has occurred because the sales in the foreign country is made in local currency. earnings are subject to dollar...strong dollar makes it hard to compete with foreign competition. most multinationals tend to import product made by their overseas operations, which tends to balance currency risk. 3m does not do this. 3m domestic export actually competes with 3m overseas facilities.
