Microsoft Corp. late Tuesday posted net income and revenue that easily topped analysts' estimates and matched "whisper" numbers making the rounds on Wall Street.

The results were buoyed by better-than-expected personal-computer shipments -- particularly in Asia -- which lifted Windows 98 and Windows NT sales. The Redmond, Wash., software giant said the imminent year-2000 changeover didn't appear to have a significant impact on results.
