t2, re >If they are successful in helping turn around the market, they instantly have a lot of supporters and that is
what they need. I remember the IBM share buyback the day after the big declines a couple of years ago (forgot the date). The news was that the IBM announcement turned around the market. That made all the newspapers and tv stations---what a great PR move that was.

I remember the IBM buyback announcement as well. I don't remember the date either, it was either fall of '97 or '98. Not that it matters. But, some still criticized IBM move as not fiscally wise for the company - since they had huge loans. But this MSFT earning is critic proof. It should be a cattle prod in turning investor sentiment from nervous fear into giddy relief -- I wouldn't want to be short anything right now! -GG- My decision to hold onto my SPX calls largely turned on MSFT reporting earnings today after the close -- Since Dell just announced that unit shipments were very strong, I didn't see any reason why MSFT revenues and earnings would be anything but strong -- I also have been watching MSFT stock price, and concluded that any upside surprise would push the stock up upon release of results. Looks like I have kept the wolf away from the door for one more day! :-)

Good trading all.
