Somewhere in between direct and retail. There is no middle man involved, but it's not "build to order" that the direct channel is usually (but not always) associated with.

Speaking of those Gateway stores, I visited one last week for the first time. I sat down in front of one of those Gateway Destination PCs, the combination of the PC with the home entertainment system. And immediately I was drooling. Think of the kind of software this sort of system can inspire! Now if only we had an OS that was truly as easy to use and as bug-free as an appliance. (Oh, wait, this is Microsoft we're talking about. What was I thinking?)

I think they are called "Gateway Country".
