Arthur,

My point is that the CF format looks like the most easy to expand in terms of capacity, and the technology under development jointly by SNDK and Toshiba for higher capacity cards has the potential of making Sony an "also ran". It's too early to draw conclusions, but hefty marketing efforts are not necessarily the key factor here...technology is.

I believe that product success is inversely proportional to dollars spent in marketing. Marketing of the Iomega Clik! is a good example.

CompactFlash will sell itself. Brand distinction (which is a different form of marketing) is a bigger issue for SanDisk. The OEM endorsements are GOLD and I hope that SanDisk marketing can come up with ways for SanDisk to be recognized "out of the box".

I agree totally that the technology advances and the associated reductions in manufacturing costs will be the key for success in 2000 and beyond. I believe the SanDisk/Toshiba joint venture is being underestimated as to its potential power and ability to define leading edge technology. I have no doubt that Sony will be begging somebody for higher capacity chip sets to boost the storage capacity of the Memory Stick.

I am betting on 256Mbit, 512Mbit, 1, 2 and 4 gigabit SanDisk/Toshiba technology with D2 (and possibly D3 or higher) enhancements and not on specific form factor issues.

Art,

The SanDisk/Toshiba JV and the Sony dependence on semiconductor manufacturers...

This is the second time this year that Toshiba has partnered with another company to add new capacity, the first being the $420 million investment by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. to upgrade Toshiba's Oita fab for the manufacture of a 128-bit CPU that will go in the next Sony Playstation.

Anyone want to venture a guess as to who may be helping Sony out with their Memory Stick manufacturing???
