IBM gapped up this AM. . .but I have to say that I don't like the news. . . think about it. . .you build a company to sell a product. . .you fight for distribution . . .you fight for the premium chain stores like Best Buy and Office Max. . . then you write them a letter that says you are no longer going to be supplying their stores with product. While you are at it, you may as well say you are going out of business. . . .

And what does that say for retail business in general? Are we now EXPECTED to make our purchases online? Like it or not? I happen to like the Aptiva and am writing you on one at this time. . .I like that it works beautifully out of the box and never gives me any lip. . . like all my custom boxes do. . .but I also like that I can walk into an Office Max and pick out the model I want. . .and load it into the car. . .

I don't want to buy via the net. . .unless I want something unusual or am bargain hunting. . .

So we need to consider this move carefully. . . how will it affect IBM's bottom line? And if it starts a trend, what will the effects be for Circuit City, Best Buy and the Office retailers?

And what's next? GM announces it is closing all of its car dealerships and selling all cars online???? You can do a virtual test drive. . .and receive a packet of new car smell to rub on your monitor. . . and select whether you wish to test drive in the city or near the beaches. . . and whether you want virtual passengers. . .and dial in the amount of traffic you would like. . . and you can smash the virtual car into a wall and see a score of injuries you would receive. . .and whether or not you would survive. . .and how much it would cost to repair the car. . .

I don't know. . .call me old fashioned. . . but there is just something quaint about the real world.

Rande- re:How do you buy an IBM computer...

Hi Rande,

I don't understand why this would be an unprofitable move if their retail model isn't making them money. Now, they won't be losing money.

Am I not understanding this correctly?

Thanx, and just my opinion.

Jon :)
