from today's WSJ, re deficit:

"American exporters, who have been battered for two years as the Asian crisis cut into their overseas markets, posted a sizable 3.7% gain in August, which lifted exports of goods and services to a record $82 billion.
But a rebound in exports may be a harbinger of faster economic growth ahead and could add to pressures on the Federal Reserve to increase interest rates at its Nov. 16 meeting.
At their October meeting, the Fed said it was worried about growth in demand outpacing supply in the economy. More demand for U.S.-made goods overseas, while beneficial to exporting companies, could put a strain on domestic production.
Imports, which have been strong all year, posted an increase of 2% and also set a new record of $106.1 billion."
