Charles the Churl was a nickname given Charlemagne when he was a young man, but was dropped later. (According to a popular biography I read, it was not scholarly) I guess he had to be churlish in order to build up a name for himself.

Cardenal may not be as pacific as you think. He was present at the attack on Somoza's palace, but I don't know if he took up arms or not. It is certain that many of his Jesuit brothers took up arms.
