Hey look Tom, we're not forgotten after all..... All Headlines Go2Net marketing campaign targets stadiums SEATTLE, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Searching for new customers and talented employees beyond major U.S. Internet centers, Web portal Go2Net Inc. (NASDAQ: GNET) on Wednesday said it had launched a marketing campaign at major college football stadiums. Promotional banners and video scoreboard ads will hawk the company to Web-savvy fans at 13 major college venues plus Seattle's pro football stadium and Portland, Oregon's basketball arena. The campaign pushes Go2Net's branding efforts into the southern and midwestern United States and builds on its ties to billionaire Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) co-founder Paul Allen, who owns more than 30 percent of the company. Allen also owns the Portland Trailblazers basketball team and Seattle Seahawks football team and his Vulcan Ventures Inc. investment fund owns Action Sports Media, which developed the stadium campaign. "The population attending college and pro sports has a proven interest in the Internet," said said Go2Net spokesman Mark Peterson. "We want to build regional awareness of Go2Net as a company and as a brand because we're trying to attract good people to join our company as well as get the Go2Net brand out there." Go2Net is adding 20 to 30 employees per month, expanding its payroll to 253 from about 85 since January. Go2Net hopes ads in stadiums at the University of Tennessee, University of Texas, Vanderbilt University and Purdue University will boost sales at recently opened offices in Atlanta, Dallas and Austin, Texas, Peterson said. Previous marketing has focused on major Internet hubs including San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Boston as well as Go2Net's home city of Seattle. The company, which did not disclose any financial terms of the campaign, has no current plans to buy naming rights for a stadium, though it its marketing reach will likely grow, Peterson said. "We are going to look for ways to much more aggressively market the Go2Net brand, as well as the brands of our individual properties," Peterson said. Web portal PSINet Inc. (NASDAQ: PSIX) paid $104 million last January to name the Baltimore Ravens' new football stadium and to wire it for Internet service. PSINet also developed a Web site for the National Football League team. Go2Net's stable of Web sites offering access to personal finance, search engines, games and business services collectively rank ninth among all portals in terms of page views as monitored by Media Metrix.
