Tench,

Aren't you are attributing unnecessary malice to AMD fans? Folks on this thread did not define segments. They just reported the segment numbers from popular press/analyst community.

It seems to me that this debate is going nowhere and taking a lot of post to get there. At the end of the day, profits are what matters and these numbers are just one of the many ways to see how the consumers (as against businesses) are adopting AMD/Intel chips.

Hopefully this is my first and my last post on that topic.

Chuck

RE <<<Jim, that's the traditional definition of retail, and I agree. But we're talking within the context of AMD here. When AMD boasted not too long ago that they had 40% to 60% of retail market share, they obviously had a much different definition of retail.>>

I just got a response to my email from Mercury Research. While they track pc component sales as opposed to pc sales, they say that pc sales trackers refer to all shipments as consumer and then break that down further into retail and direct which is mostly online sales.

Of course this is what I have been saying along.

Ten,
RE:"Remember the days when some rabid AMD fanatics were proclaiming
the downfall of Intel by pointing to "retail market share"? They would
have never listened to what the traditional definition of retail should have
been. "...
You should know better than to think that anyone left here seriously thinks AMD will bring down Intel...Those that did are long gone.
A lot of what is said here must be taken in the context of competition. Jousting etc...
