My problem with Ariba is that they are far from alone in this market and there are a lot of worthy competitors who would just love to have a slice of their pie. Can Oracle (or Peoplesoft, or SAP, or CMRC, or any combination of the bunch), for example, ultimately do to Ariba what Microsoft did to Netscape?

At the Oracle Apps Users Group meeting in Orlando, I saw a demo of the next release of Oracle's Self Service Purchasing product, as well as Oracle Exchange. Pretty snazzy stuff, all integrated tightly with Oracle's ERP, with the option to go standalone and integrate with other ERP's. At my current job, we chose Oracle SSP over Ariba because we're an Oracle shop and Oracle essentially gave away SSP, and we felt Oracle would quickly catch up to (if not overtake) Ariba in functionality and business partners since they have the resources to do so. I know Oracle's pouring lots of effort into this product as part of their push to web enable everything.

Plus there's this little concern of Ariba's current valuation - 8BB. Excuse me...my nose started bleeding just thinking about this.
