RE: "Yesterday the Sunnyvale fab had a chemical release of HCl into the surrounding air."

Unlucky. They also recently had a Y2K problem in Dresden (from WaferNews):

"Practice makes perfect? -- Many semiconductor fabs are running experiments to validate their efforts to check all computer-linked systems to ensure they will not fail at midnight going into the year 2000 (Y2K). Most are planning shutdowns, ranging from a couple of hours to an 8-hour shift (which often is done on New Year's Eve anyway). Some are delaying installing new equipment until after the first of the year. A major concern is local power companies. One power company exercise in Dresden, Germany, backfired, reports Gino Crisperi, with International Sematech in Austin. The engineers lost control of the power plant, and electricity to the AMD plant in Dresden failed. The upshot was an advance workout on the Y2K issue for the AMD legal staff."

SCUMbria - Re: "AMD stinks, literally.
Yesterday the Sunnyvale fab had a chemical release of HCl into the surrounding air. This forced a nearby Montessori school to keep their children indoors for the entire school day, and turn off all heating and air conditioning to avoid introducing outside air into the school.

Perhaps if they made some money once in a while, they would have a larger safety budget.
"

Sounds like you work REAL CLOSE to the sub-Micron facility.

Which AMD building are you in ?
