Paid for public service Fibre Channel Supplement advertising by IBM in the form of a SAN White Paper contracted out to (or solicited by) a freelance writer. This is money well spent (big hint to all FC companies). The paper doesn't mention IBM solutions (does mention Compaq), and provides links to other (paying?) vendors.

It is informative and illustrative. The SAN market needs to know why it needs what it needs and how it's going to save their butts from ending up in the internet trash can. Witness the debut crash of britannica.com and the morning traffic jams on schwab.com.

Free to subscribe, worth the hassle, make up the numbers (that's why I put little faith in the trade rag customer hardware/software profiles they peddle)(snicker).

According to International Data Corp. (IDC) research, SANs and the Fibre Channel technology that connects them will become the preferred storage solution in enterprise data centers. Further, Fibre Channel-based storage revenue will hit $15 billion by 2002, according to IDC reports.

...When you look at the storage devices on a SAN, look at the types of servers it takes to move data through a SAN, and look at how much a SAN component costs. Then you will understand why there are few SANs without six-figure price tags.

At those prices, the customer has got to know what they are getting. Every little bit expended to educate the market (and the investor) adds up to a bigger bite.
