GOLD FIELDS to Pursue Acquisitions

DENVER, Oct 20 (Reuters) - South African mining giant Gold Fields Ltd. <GFLJ.S> said on Wednesday that it would pursue acquisitions and mergers in a bid to diversify its operations outside Africa.
"We are getting a lot more aggressive. We are talking to a lot of people about potential deals. I wouldn't be surprised if we do something in the new year," Gold Fields Chairman Christopher Thompson told delegates at the Denver Gold Group's annual conference.
Thompson said the company would look at deals that provided the company a foothold in the Americas, Australia and Asia, though he added acquisitions would be judged based on their potential to add value to Gold Fields operations.
Gold Fields, one of the world's largest gold producers, recently closed out most of its gold hedges because of a belief that the price of gold could continue to rise in the future.
The company operates several low-cost mines in South Africa and a heap-leach project in Ghana.
