Yougang,

<Looks like AMD will NOT launch Athlon 750 when Intel debuts its Copppermine 733 on 10/25.

This is based on my communication (this morning) with AMD official who is questioning whether Coppermine 733 can beat Athlon 700 in performance.>

Did you talk to Toni or Drew or one of the investor or public relations folks? If you did, then I would not take that too seriously since they do not have the authority to advertize the product before launch - unless they clearly stated that "we will not launch" the product.

Think of it this way - all of Athlon wafer starts by the end of the month will be 180nm based on the info that 0.18 line is generating 2x the useful dies as 0.25 line. Given how far along the 0.18 conversion is, it is safe to assume that, some of the dies from the 0.18 line so far are being packaged into final products as we discuss this subject.

Even if one were to make the pessimistic case assumption that the 0.25 micron line is not yielding anything better than 700MHz, the 0.18 line should eliminate that problem. So, the launch of higher speed grade parts is a marketing decision and not a capability decision. I have no info on what factors AMD marketing is taking into consideration for establishing the launch date. Now, we can all guess what they could be ;-)

As I have said earlier, I do not know the if launch date is the 24th or the 25th or something else. However, based on customer sightings I would expect AMD to launch at least one other speed grade for this quarter.

Chuck

Whether Athlon 700 outperforms Cumine 733 is pretty much irrelevant - for the consumer lower megahertz = slower processor. AMD knows this and will not let Intel steal their Athlon thunder if at all possible.

We have seen indications that there are 750s out there already, but what AMD does not want to do is muddy the waters by allowing rumors of the 750 BEFORE the Cumine 733 is announced. I predict that the 750 announcement will be close on the heels of Intel's announcement next week.

As Paul so rightly points out, you don't have to have too many of the processors on shelves to take the wind out of a competitors sails with an up-staging announcement.

The only concern I have is that I think Intel are also playing their cards very close to the chest at present and we may see a pre-emptive announcement from them (Cumine 766?).

What fun.

And go MSFT!
