Athlons sold by AMD to oems and end users are actually Athlon processor modules - they look similar to VHS tape catridges. The processor module consists of a pc board with Athlon CPU chip, L2 cache(SRAM chip) and associated electronic components soldered onto it; a casing to enclose/protect the pc board, and a heat sink (I'm not sure, if heatsink is part of the module assembly, or added on to the module by the oems.)
