US may reduce dependence on India for opium supply -DAMN

INDIA'S pre-eminent position as the world's largest supplier of licit opium may be threatened by a proposal pending with the US government seeking to reduce the overwhelming US dependence on Indian opium. While it will be a blow to India's narcotics control system, it speaks volumes for the state of Indian industry which has become a major exercise in political patronage. (Fe 10/21/99)
