Thanks for the info on web-advertising.

I know that companies like DoubleClick and Engage are betting that they can improve the click-through rates by personalizing the banner ads -- aka Internet direct mail -- but the privacy concerns are alarming and IMO may lead to backlash.

I agree with Cringely that Internet "ads", in the sense of bombarding passive viewers, has not found a working model on the Internet. Though if you think about it, half the web is advertising, and works effectively when it is being actively searched for. But the great TV success story -- make your audience want new things they don't know or want right now! has not been duplicated on the web. I hope it never is.

Or will you throw virtual tomatoes at me for such an anti-capitalist wish?
