EarthLink's loss widened to $124.3 million, or $3.84 a share, from $71.9 million, or $2.53, a year earlier. Sales rose 80 percent to $89.6 million from $49.8 million, while marketing expenses rose to $38.3 million from $10.6 million.

EarthLink added 231,000 subscribers in the quarter as it emphasized customer service in advertising targeted at dissatisfied users of America Online. Last month, the company said it plans to merge with rival MindSpring Enterprises to become the No. 2 U.S. Internet access provider.

"We've been spending more money on marketing and been getting significantly more members than we did a year ago," said Grayson Hoberg, chief financial officer at EarthLink.

Tsk, tsk ... better luck with Mindspring. I would hate to think of their subscriber numbers if they didn't increase their marketing spending. BTW, AOL signed up 1.1 million in the quarter. Looks like Earthlink/Mindspring have some serious catching up to do ...
