COMPAQ: Compaq launches global online services community

Story Filed: Wednesday, October 20, 1999 4:18 PM EST

OCT 20, 1999, M2 Communications - Compaq today announced the Europe, Middle East and Africa
(EMEA) implementation of Compaq Services Network, a web-based virtual community between
Compaq and its authorised service channel partners. The Compaq Services Network enables service
partner members to complete transactions, such as online parts ordering and claims registration,
through the Internet.

"Customers are looking for quality and innovation, not only in product and service solutions, but in the
relationship with their chosen vendor," said Cathy McCaul, director of Compaq Customer Services.
"In the new 24 by 7 world, it is essential for every business to maintain reliable connections with
customers. Through the Compaq Services Network, customers have access to Compaq and a
community of qualified and authorised service providers that utilise the latest web-based technology to
provide the highest quality of service consistently around the world."

The Compaq Services Network is designed to enable Compaq and its partners to achieve greater
economies of scale through the ability to share resources, transfer knowledge, and streamline logistics.
The network provides tools and technology to help partners compete more effectively through
improved productivity, reduced cost of doing business, and simplified access to resources. These
include:

Knowledge management tools

eCarePaq

Online partner authorisation & enrolment

Web-enabled CarePaq registration

Performance reporting and benchmarking

Pay for performance for warranty

eClaims for warranty

Online parts ordering & tracking

Compaq has created globally consistent partner designations, Premier Service Reseller, Authorised
Service Provider and Systems Service Provider. These designations will be rolled out in UK
immediately and will ensure that only qualified service channel partners can resell and/or deliver
Compaq services. Partners' access to the Compaq Services Network is determined and managed by
their designation. Compaq recognises and rewards partners for their level of investment and
performance as part of these designations.

"Compaq's service channel partners expect Compaq and its competitors to provide globally
consistent, high quality products and services," said Tom Iannotti, Vice President and General
Manager, Customer Services, Compaq Computer Europe, Middle East and Africa. "Moreover,
partners and customers continually articulate a need for a strong, committed relationship with their
vendor. The Compaq Services Network is proof of our strong commitment to meeting both customer
and service channel partner needs."

The Compaq Services Network's web-based community also offers Performance Management
capabilities to ensure customers receive high quality service solutions. Compaq will compensate
partners for their performance based on a balanced scorecard approach, including both operational and
customer satisfaction metrics.
