The lessons will be obvious. They will see that their father worked hard to pay/earn two college degrees. They will see that he worked for 15 years saving and investing wisely. They will see that working hard allows financial independence such that they can chose how to spend their day. Perhaps that day is spent working at a charity.

Retiring due to financial independence SHOWS a work ethic - not inversely as you imply.
