Kingston Offers Digital TV for 9.99 Pounds/Month London, Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Kingston Communications Plc, a U.K. phone company that first sold shares to the public earlier this year, introduced a digital television service for as little as 9.99 pounds ($16.70) a month, slightly more than rival TV companies, and will be the first U.K. company to offer full Internet access through the television for a flat monthly fee. The company, 49.9 percent owned by Kingston-Upon-Hull City Council, will offer viewers in the Hull region as many as 50 TV channels and the ability to browse the Internet at high speeds using asymmetric digital subscriber lines, or ADSL. The company unveiled plans to offer the service earlier this month. Kingston Interactive Television will compete with British Sky Broadcasting Group Plc's 140-channel SkyDigital satellite service in offering digital television in the 120 square-mile region around Hull. BSkyB, 40 percent-owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., offers a digital TV service that includes interactive features such as shopping and e-mail for as little as 7 pounds a month. Unlike BSkyB customers, Kingston subscribers will be able to watch movies ``on demand' for a fee and will also be able to pay a fixed monthly fee of 14.99 pounds a month to get full Internet access through the television at speeds up to 256 kilobits per second. Users of the Internet service won't have to pay extra in local phone charges for the time spent online. Kingston's shares rose 10 pence, or 2.4 percent, to 431.5p. The company said earlier this month that it would start by selling its service to 1,500 homes in the Hull area and eventually expand to Kingston's entire 155,000 customer base. None of the U.K.'s cable companies operate in Kingston's Northern England region and a digital TV service provided through antennas by ONdigital, co-owned by Carlton Communications Plc and Granada Group Plc, can't be received in the region, Kingston Chief Executive Steve Maine said earlier this month. ONdigital offers digital television for as little as 6.99 pounds a month with no Internet access. Telewest Communications Plc, the U.K.'s second biggest cable company by customers, plans to release pricing details of its digital television package Thursday. That service will become available in the north of England on Oct. 30.
