The Yewnited States of Amurika decided to shoot up a bunch of what they called Commie Gooks and i made a buck on the paper of an outfit that was ready able and willing to supply copper into the ensuing bull market for that metal. Of this i am not particularly proud, but - This happened. I was there. Of course there was more to it than shell casings, copper is used in alloys and wiring throughout military technology, and in addition there were increases in housing starts such that lumber rose pretty good up till the tight money of '66, and then bounced back up right after. The woods of the Wet Coast were jumping in those days. This happened. I was there. Every house built meant many pounds of copper. But laid over all was the perception of the dominant nation of the planet taking a side in a civil war on the side of the planet opposite to itself, and the sense of impending doom that that involvement so inevitably wraught. Copper went up. This happened. I was there. Some days it went down sure, but it went from real low to considerably higher at a point advantageous to me. Now maybe i don't have the year right, don't have the records any more due to moving around. But this i know - A really ancient old prospector guy from back east, northern Québec i think, a man perhaps as old at the time as fifty, explained to me just how and why Giant Mascot was undervalued both on the basis of its fundamentals and the imminent rise in the copper market, largely using the Northern Miner for corroborating evidence. I bought shares, and made money, for two reasons combined; 1. The USA decided to expend the blood of its youth and incidentally a fair bit of copper in a project apparently designed to teach some commie gooks on the other side of the planet a good ol John Wayne lesson or two. Too bad Charlie never caught those movies, eh. 2. Giant Mascot had the metal. They had it in quantities and qualities sufficient to make a buck, they had the financing to set up to produce it, and the smarts to get their ass in gear to do so. And they did. So the stock went up. I maintain that this fundamental stuff matters, and will continue to matter.
