Vancouver Teleport is the owner and operator of the new satellite communications network. VIPSatNet is a system which provides broadband Internet-based satellite communication solutions. Over the past several weeks the demo unit has been deployed to the Saskatchewan Forest Fire Service for use at a forest fire base camp called Methy. The communication services used are telephone calling, Internet access and faxing. The VIPSatNet system supported a camp of 120 people, including 12 helicopter teams, eight heavy truck teams, and 19 D-9 (digger) teams. Communications support provided the ability for these teams to order new parts, discuss repair procedures with outside support, arrange crew changes, phone and E-mail family members. In total 4,286 outgoing calls were made from camp Mothy. The communications support eliminated the need to travel 25 kilometres to the nearest town to make non-emergency calls. The success of Vancouver Teleport's VIPSatNet demo trailer shows Vancouver Teleport's ability to deliver a complete range of new communication solutions.
