Thanks for your observations on communications difficulty. While it is true that enough sats have been LAUNCHED to begin service rollout, I would guess that the most recent 8 are not yet in service. So I would expect the service to be spotty for 2 or 3 hours each day until all required satellites are operational. This is probably the main reason that the distribution of phones to only "friendly" potential customers is being done at this time.

I have observed similar difficulty receiving GPS when my antenna field of view was limited to being pointed 30 degrees above the horizon. Of course some times during the day the receiver had no difficulty finding 5 satellites. Other times only 2 or 3 were received.

It is possible that someone could run Satellite Tool Kit to determine what GSTRF satellites were in range when you made your calls.
