Vodafone climbs on talk of European strike
LONDON, Oct 21 (Reuters) - Shares in Vodafone AirTouch Plc climbed on Thursday, rebounding from recent weakness, as speculation swirled the mobile 'phone giant would look for a mega-deal in Europe in response Mannesmann AG's bid for Orange (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: ORA.L), dealers said,

Vodafone stock rose 12-1/2p or 4.9 percent to 269-1/2p by 0901 GMT in heavy volume of around 88 million shares, having earlier traded as low as 246p.

Theories as to Vodafone's next move included a possible bid for Mannesmann after the German group's stock fell amid fears it was paying too much for Orange. Dealers said there were also concerns as to how Mannesmann may finance the deal.

``There may now be a good opportunity for Vodafone to get their hands on some reasonably priced and desirable European assets,' said a dealer.

Yet some dealers and analysts had said in recent days that a Vodafone takeover of Mannesmann might be earnings dilutive for the UK giant.

Such worries have been partly responsible for the 51p or 16p fall by the stock from its record high of 320-1/2p set on October 12.

Earlier Mannesmann said it still regarded Vodafone as a key ally.

Dealers also said Vodafone stock was being lifted for valuation reasons. They pointed out the Mannesmann bid for Orange was at a significant premium to the UK company's share price, and investors were now hoping for a similar re-rating for Vodafone.
