If I ever saw an item that every teenager in the world wants

Hey forget teenagers. As much time as I spend on airplanes I'd love to have one. Been stuck watching "Air Bud II" one to many times (and paying $5 for the privilege of renting the headphones).

The DVD player is a $10 cost item to them, because it has been manufactured for years as a portable CD player

Not quite true. Because the information on DVD is packed much denser than on an audio CD, the optics and electronics have to be more sensitive. Still, you're main point that the cost driver is probably the LCD is probably still correct.

So if any of you know of a company working on a LCD screen with a really new low cost approach, let us know!

How about skipping the screen altogether? Microvision, a development stage company, is working on projecting images directly into the eye, no screen needed. They are going after military and medical first, but I see the day when Sony and MVIS will be one mean team. Far to early for MVIS to be a Gorilla or even a SP, but I see all of those CRTs and LCDs around, and see them being replaced by MVIS. Have a look.
