Not to worry.

1. Neither Niles nor the CNBC teleprompter readers have an intimate knowledge of the difference in nature of IBM's customers vs Dell's with respect to the Y2K issue.

IBM sold big iron to corporate data centers filled with COBOL programmers for more than 3 decades. They may well have a Y2K issue related to the mainframe side of their business.

Michael Dell wasn't even a gleam in his parent's eyes when the seeds of the Y2K problem were being laid. [the Y2K problem that is, not MSD's parents. <g>]

2. IBM announced that it's PC business gave it a $1B loss in the prior earnings report. IBM has had difficulty competing in this sector ever since CPQ and DELL emerged on the scene. Seeing them cut their losses is not surprising.

3. MSFT's awesome results should lay to rest any disinformation that the PC sector is anything but alive, well and thriving.

JMHO,
Ian.

Where did Niles get the idea that it was not just the high end stuff or is he just pushing an agenda? Either he had his head up his a$$ this morning (hadn't even read the IBM statement) or he was intentionally bad mouthing INTC and Dell

Maybe the hot sun has affected his brain. I do not know if Dan Niles goes to tanning salon everyday. Have you noticed how dark he has become? VBG

Gertsner and 5Fer must be related. They just blame their own problems to the market. Y2K affects mainly mainframes, taht is where it started with the old language: BAL, FORTRAN, COBOL etc. Therefore, many major companies are deferring computer upgrades until the turmoil of Y2K subsides. AG said that Y2K problem is not that drastic, and I think it won't. Even in the banking system. Although foreign borrowers/banks have not solved the problem, it won't sffect the US banking system. Reason? US Banking system has practically completed Y2K compliance and since they hold the foreign borrowers accounts, US banks simply debit those accounts for interest/principal payments. And US has the most number of lawyers in the world. You can be sure than loan agreements are drawn airtight proctecting the lender.

I will not be surprised if currently Dell will move to other related areas like wireless linked to computers. Dell is innovative, and will not just be viewed as sticking only to selling computers. Wireless is the name of the game, both for the US and abroad, and I feel that Dell does not close its eyes in that market.

Best regards and good luck to all

Just remember: Dell is a solid company.
