95% of unix servers were from Sun

Ravi,

This is very heartening since I bought Sun today. Also sold IBM naked puts and wouldn't mind owning IBM, not for hardware but for internet consulting services. I feel that big iron has been a drag on IBM's earnings for years. The company certainly recognizes this and is addressing it appropriately. Gerstner has turned the company around and shouldn't be blamed for making a conservative forecast. The issue is that the analysts can't get over the next 2 quarters. Fortunately I can. If the stock sported a 75 PE I might be concerned, but at market multiple, it's a great investment.

Sun, of course, is a different story. Much higher PE but probably worth it considering its dominance of the UNIX server marker that you noticed.

Pretty soon it will be time to be buying the homebuilders selling below book value with PEs in mid single digits. Can't put too many eggs in the alluring tech basket ;-)

Namaste,

Sam

One mans anecdotal experience. No validity.
Y2k and some sped up demand that borrowed from the 2nd half of the year.
Thats the story.
That it closed above 90 was about the best one could have hoped for after it dropped below 90 in the PM today.

I've been here before.

I went to the IBM web site to maybe purchase a computer for my son to go to collage. I was looking at a high end Aptiva S. the lack of data on the innards; number of DIMM slots DMA66 support put me off. IBM's concept of customizing your machine is adding a digital camera and offering two different printers. I can buy a superior machine that I can upgrade on ebay for a lot less. The days when IBM HP and Compaq can pass off machines with 128mg memory limits when the standard is 768MG and put 4mg video on board when I pay less and get 32MGs down the street are over.

IBM has some great tech. They need to set up a site like SAG or Dell where if you want Scsi drives or anything else you can get it.

Another thing. If you don't know what their cutesy names connote that they assign to their boxes, you don't know where to begin. They also want to put you in a home or an office. They should have at least one place online where you can build from scratch. And put the specs on the site. Stop pawning inferior proprietary motherboards off on people.
How many people bought their machines last year and found out that 64MGs was the limit on memory. Charley Chan's machine supports 256mgs and cost hundred less.
