All the valuation talk is just to show that the current Rambus price assumes:

1) A dominant share of the DRAM market over the next 5 years

2) Continuation as a large player beyond that

And the point is just to ask the question: What makes everyone think that the Rambus IP will be valuable 5 years out?

True, new technologies don't usually spring out of nowhere. But we have some challengers on the scene that can take share from Rambus.

You have new technology that lowers the cost/pin which is a main Rambus advantage (since it uses less pins).

You have embedded DRAM that is becomming more practical as feature sizes shrink.

You have evolutionary technologies (SDRAM and DDR SDRAM) that some say offer the same advantages on the mobo as Rambus at lower cost and minus some of Rambus' disadvantages.

Today's Overall Market showed impressive strength all things considered. But the seed has been sowed for Y2K worries, and won't likely show it's true force until after Bird day... But come mid to late Dec, those inclined will likely have one of the greatest buying opportunities in market history, IMO.

In the mean time, be careful out there.
