Next Sea Launch: early 2000 [ICO satellite]

The Sea Launch consortium plans its
second commercial satellite launch in
January 2000. A Boeing spokesman
confirmed that the payload will in fact be
an ICO satellite. ICO, which filed for
bankruptcy recently, plans to launch the
first of up to nine satellites in January or
February as part of a scaled-back plan to
offer wireless telephone service.

ICO hopes to put another bird in orbit in March or April 2000, which would
allow a limited roll-out of the service, and then have one of its satellites launched
every month. The company's other launch options are Boeing's Delta III rocket,
Lockheed Martin Corp.'s Atlas 2AS and Russia's Proton rocket. Original plans
called for a total of 12 ICO satellites.

Sea Launch will serve up a total of five or six satellites next year and six to eight
in 2001. Boeing spokesman Terrance Scott was quoted as saying, "The market
for geostationary (satellites) is a little softer than was originally anticipated."
Analysts have estimated Sea Launch would need at least six projects a year to
make a profit.

Sea Launch has had two successful launches so far, including a test launch in
March.
