"Vendors grumbling over Intel's 820 chip set delays

The delay in Intel's shipping of its 820 chip set for Pentium III processors is the subject of much grousing within the industry.

Although few vendors would address the issue on the record, most appeared to be unhappy with this turn of events.

"We don't expect to sell the new 733-MHz Pentium III desktop until the 820 is ready," said one vendor, who requested anonymity.

The 820 chip set will enable a number of desktop-performance features, including a 133-MHz system bus, a 4X Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP), and the faster Rambus memory technology.

The current chip set supports a 100-MHz system bus, a 2X AGP, and only synchronous DRAM.

The word in the industry is that the 820 chip set is on "indefinite hold." IT managers with first-quarter deployment schedules will have to settle for the current chip set or find a vendor that will ship systems with another solution.
