PC and BGR, re: clues on where to invest.
While I think investment in Net infrastructure is probably a good bet, I don't think the problems I've been experiencing are related.
In the case of Schwab, I'm guessing the issues are more server/software related. Maybe Schwab's move to after hours trading is part of the problem?
As for the phone problems, it appears that the central switches aren't robust enough to handle the increasing loads. I talked to one BellCo serviceman who said the switches need significant hardware upgrades to handle the increasing traffic. Part of the problem is rapid growth in new home construction. He says many new homes have four or five lines installed. Apparently mom, dad and the kids all want their own private line. And many of these will be used for concurrent internet access. (Good news for the PC industry?) <g> I've heard of local areas that have waiting lists of 6 weeks for new phone installations.
While No Virginia may represent a worse case for these problems, I think it's a harbinger of things to come for the rest of the nation. So I think the net experience may get worse for many before it gets better. JMHO's
