October 21, 1999 19:14 September Web traffic down for some networks - survey NEW YORK, Oct 21 (Reuters) - Internet media networks such as America Online, Yahoo! and Lycos, some of the Web's most popular destinations, lost ground to other sites in September, even as overall U.S. Internet traffic grew, a leading market researcher found. Media Metrix Inc. , in its closely watched monthly survey of the top 50 Internet networks, released data on Wednesday showing a modest increase in overall Web traffic, but thinned-out traffic on several of the major Web networks. While Media Metrix surveys are subject to some variation, the traffic statistics clearly showed a decline in the number of visitors to America Online Inc. , Yahoo! Inc. , Lycos and Go2Net Network. "I think people pay too much attention to the Media Metrix numbers," said Michael Wallace, an Internet analyst with Warburg Dillon Read. "It's a small snapshot of what's going on and I don't have a lot of faith in the raw numbers anyway." Lycos Inc. viewership fell about 6 percent losing more than 1.5 million visitors, but maintained its No. 4 spot on the list of the top 50. Both Yahoo and ExciteAtHome Corp. lost about 5 percent of their viewership. Go2Net Inc. suffered the greatest loss with a 13 percent decline in visitors from August to September. Visitors declined to 9.8 million in September from 11 million in August, causing it to fall from No. 9 on the chart to No. 12. "It was a little surprising because we actually expected September to show an uptick from August because of all the people on vacation during August," said Arthur Newman, an Internet analyst with Schroder & Co. Newman said he attributes the decline in unique visitors to some of the major networks to more Web users gaining awareness of alternatives to the major portals, such as AOL and Yahoo, that are so widely known and used. "All the IPOs that have happened recently have really fueled advertising budgets for a lot of other small sites," Newman said. "Now that people are aware of those sites, they've stopped using or reduced their allegiance to the major sites." Visitors to AOL networks declined about 2 percent, but it maintained its No. 1 position with nearly 52 million unique visitors every month, Media Metrix reported. eBay Inc. managed to creep up a few notches on the chart with a 13 percent jump in visitors. The online auction site raked in 10 million viewers in September, up 1.1 million from a month ago. It climbed from the No. 16 spot to No. 11. "The (Media Metrix) sample is tens of thousands as opposed to millions of people that are online, so I don't focus too much on the raw numbers," Wallace said. "I focus on the numbers the companies report because that's a better reflection."
