I think that's a vital point in making a list like this. A list like this is a way of writing a shorthand history -- a way of accounting for the changes that occurred between two arbitrary points in time, 1900 and 1999.

Whether the focus is toward art, politics, science, or some other field, one can find a few people who had inordinate influence on the changes that occurred. In art, Picasso was one of those people. Adding his name to the list should be non-controversial if the list is to be a meaningful exercise.
