Hi Matey,

No, when they pop the perfs the bottomhole pressure, inside the casing, will not be 15,400 psi. That elevated pressure exists only on the exterior of the casing. The pressure inside the casing will only be the weight of whatever "load fluid" they have in the tubing string.

If they fill the tubing with fresh water, the downhole pressure would be roughly 7,600 psi which would still leave a huge pressure differential of about 7,800 psi from the formation into the wellbore. That's too much. So, they'll use a "weighted completion fluid" to reduce that differential. I'm not a completion expert (i.e. take this with a grain of salt) but my guess is that they'll likely try and reduce that differential to something more in the order of about 3,000 psi. Even that is high (but it will give them a good perforation "cleanup" when that formation gas comes screaming through the perfs and into the well !!).

BTW, just to clarify, the perforating charges will actually shoot "holes", roughly 1" diameter, through the casing. They don't "crack" the casing. I imagine they've selected some pretty heavy duty and deep penetrating charges here and will try to create "holes" that physically extend 16" or so beyond the casing and cement. I don't know what perforating interval they have selected nor the perforating density or phasing. It really is not critical to "us".

Hope that helps and have a good weekend.
