There was a bubble of unusual street turbulence during the "Crack Wars". Various factors, including incarceration, attrition, and consolidation, have made drug gangs less violent, which accounts for a lot of the drop in urban homicides in this decade. Otherwise, there continues to be a lot of gang activity....

There was just an article earlier this week that pointed out some of the new crime facts. The headline I remember was "Crime reaches all time low!" All time means as low as it was in 1967.

Remember though, crime rates are national aggregates. It's a lot lower in Newark now than in 1990, but a lot higher in DC.
