thomas l: The Globalstar experience. I was also at Telecom 99 and tried out Iridium and Globalstar service to the same number. The Globalstar system was so much better, The Iridium call set-up took too long, there was delay and cut-out, basically quality was crap. The Globastar service gave much higher voice quality with a little but noticeable delay, but it was at least usable when comaperd to the Iridium. However, I would agree with comments that the terminals are all diabolical. They are huge bricks. To me the best styled phone is Ericsson's one (yes I am an Ericy supporter big-time, so take this whatever way you want). But imagine my surprise when I finally saw one in the 'flesh'! It too was very big. The antennas are also just a pain and unbelievably big (someone compared it to a nightstick!). So what was the smartest satellite phone at the trade fair? Well it was undoubtedly the Nera phone for the ICO system (if it ever, quite literally, gets off the ground). The Nera handset was far more compact and was also quite 'trendily' styled. Shame nobody here took the time to look them up (they were in Halls 1-2 upstairs if I can remember that far back!). The telecom people (magazine editors and others I have worked with) I know tend to think Globalstar has the best chance for the future, personally it will take a lot for me to believe the business case. It might have the best chance, but that chance is still small (the opinion of me and my contacts). GSTRF finally came out with market figures when in Geneva, but I took them with a pinch of salt -however at least they weren't over optimistic. I am just not convinced that there is a market. If there is, I am sure it will take a very, very long time to evolve. All the best, M
