Jon Koplik: OT WD-40 might help. Could be as simple as temperature. Not knowing the climate, but...
Need same metal for tumbler and key, brass keys work best.
Moisture: Could be ice? Blow dryer, don't blow in locks with breath, only makes it worse.
Dry graphite or silicone is best to lubricate.
Key may have dent, bend, or rough edge, file gently, or new key.
Door may be telling you something. Enter cautiously. JK.
Buy more Q.

Wash off fish? Never heard that one before! Did any survive?

Maybe someone else has the exact answer, hope this helps?

Q rocks...

on lock, try a medium quantity of sewing oil onto the key, then insert and remove several times

do not use too much or too little
WD40 is better for removing rusted nuts and fasteners
stick with refined oil

<< (minor) home repair question. If it is very difficult to both turn a key in a deadbolt lock and to even push the key in at all, is this one of those "go get the WD-40" type situations ?>>

1. Make sure you have the right key; this is crucial!

2. Peek in window and see if wife is on the other side of the door holding the deadbolt handle; inquire why.

3. If #1 and #2 are not applicable, get a little 99 cent tube of dry powdered graphite and squirt it into the key hole; it should work smoothly.

Good luck, Jon! ; )
